Five Natural Winter Skin Care Tips

Even the healthiest skin can suffer during the cold winter months. Dry air, harsh winds and freezing temperatures create an atmosphere that can cause severe skin problems. You can avoid some of these issues by taking care of your skin on a daily basis. You can also correct issues that arise by using natural skin care products.

1. Change Moisturizers for Dry Skin

Cold air dries out skin’s natural oil production. Dry, unhealthy skin looks flaky and drab. It also tends to be itchy and uncomfortable. The best way to combat dry skin in the winter is to swap your regular moisturizer for a natural oil.

Argan oil is an excellent choice. Argan oil keeps moisture inside without clogging pores in the way that mineral oils can. It also absorbs quickly without being greasy.

2. Don’t Forget Sunscreen

Most people equate sunscreen with hot weather. Unfortunately, skin can be just as easily damaged during the coldest months of the year. Use sunscreen on all exposed before spending any time outside. It may be wise to invest in a moisturizer that contains SPF so that you don’t forget to protect yourself. In addition, always use sunscreen prior to those long holiday road trips. The glare of the sun beating down through windows can cause you to burn.

Natural sunscreen is available at health food stores. You can also make your own sunscreen using products that contain natural SPF. These ingredients include almond oil, coconut oil, zinc oxide, red raspberry seed oil, carrot seed oil and shea butter.

3. Stay Hydrated

Dehydrated skin, unlike dry skin, is not caused by harsh chemicals or exposure to cold air. Dehydrated skin occurs when moisture is depleted from within the body. This is often due to not drinking enough water, drinking excessive alcohol or sugary drinks, and chemical imbalances.

The best way to avoid dehydrated skin is to drink sufficient non-sugar, non-caffeinated beverages. Also, using argan oil to restore skin’s ability to maintain moisture will combat the fine lines that appear when skin is dehydrated.

4. Relieve Itchy Skin Naturally

The itchiness caused by dry skin does not have to be endured until spring. To relieve itchy skin, take a warm bath that has been treated with finely ground oatmeal. The oats will naturally take away the itch while leaving your skin feeling smooth and soft.

An oatmeal body mask is beneficial if your skin is very sensitive. Mix oatmeal flour with a soothing oil, like argan or olive, and apply it to your skin before rinsing off and patting dry. This mask is even gentle enough to use on chapped facial skin.

5. Use a Stronger Night Cream

Skin does most of its healing at night. Use a night cream to help your skin protect itself while you rest. The best night cream is one you make yourself that does not contain harsh chemicals or additives.

Conversely, you can use argan oil or coconut oil as a nighttime treatment. Simply rub small amounts of warmed oil into your skin after cleansing. Argan oil absorbs well so you don’t have to worry about leaving behind a greasy pillow.
