The Best Foods for Your Skin Type

Each of us have our own, unique characteristics that make us who we are. This applies to our skin as well. Depending on your skin’s special needs, you may have a very different approach to skincare than your best friend, sister or doctor. This is also true when it comes to diet.

All women can benefit from drinking more water and eating foods that are high in nutrition. Removing fat, sugar and preservatives from the diet is beneficial to everyone. Still, there are some foods that should be eaten in higher quantities or avoided altogether depending on your skin type.

Dry Skin

Eat plenty of fruit, especially berries. There is no need to focus on trends like goji or acai. Blueberries are just as healthy if not more. Simply make sure you are eating organic berries that have not been treated with pesticides. Also be sure to wash them well.

Dry skin also benefits from those foods that contain natural healthy oils. Cook with pure olive oil. Add flaxseed to salads and shakes. Munch on nuts like cashews or almonds. Add avocado to recipes whenever possible.

If your skin is dry, you should cut back on alcohol, which can be dehydrating.

Oily Skin

If you have oily skin, you should seek foods that are rich in antioxidants. Leafy, green vegetables are your best, but that doesn’t mean your future has to be a series of salads. Spinach is delicious on sandwiches or when cooked with pasta, rice or meats. Crisp, baked kale can take the place of chips.

Other foods high in antioxidants, like sweet potatoes and carrots, can be prepared in multiple ways. Quinoa and brown rice are also excellent choices.

Those with oily skin should try to avoid dairy whenever possible.

Combination Skin

Is your skin dry in places and oily in others? If so, you have combination skin. The best way to combat combination skin is with fresh vegetables. Eat lots of cruciferous veggies likes broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower. Keeping your diet high in lean protein and low in carbohydrates should help as well.

In addition to a healthier diet, combination skin benefits the most from gentle skin treatments. Argan oil is an excellent choice for clear skin that is balanced in every way. Simply apply to clean skin in a circular motion in the morning and at night. Other oils that have balancing properties include coconut, rosehip and castor oil.
