Braised Brisket – A Hanukah Dinner

The Hanukah Dinner is never complete without a brisket dish. Imagine a tender beef flavored with typical spices with lemon juice and prunes. What you get is the delicious Braised Brisket dish. This brisket is so good that is should be present in your Hanukah dinner this year.

This brisket dish may take time to prepare but it is all worth it. It is a large dish capable of serving 6 people.

Here are the ingredients:

  • 3 lbs of beef brisket, well trimmed and without bones
  • 8 oz of dried pitted prunes
  • 1 chopped large onion
  • a tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • a tablespoon of lemon juice
  • a pound of carrots
  • a teaspoon of salt
  • 1 and ¾ cup of beef broth
  • ½ teaspoon of black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon

Preparing the Braised Brisket

Get a large pot for making soup. Pour the vegetable oil in and heat it over medium heat. After a few minutes add the brisket and start cooking it until it is brown from all sides. Then get the chopped onion and add it to the pot. Start stirring until the smell of onion has filled the pot.

Add the 1 and ¾ cup of beef broth into the pot. Heat it until it boils and reduce the heat to low level. Cover the pot and start simmering the brisket for 2 hours. After 2 hours, add the carrots, lemon juice, salt, cinnamon, pepper and brown sugar into the pot. Cover and let it cook until the brisket is tender enough that you can easily pierce it with a fork. When this happens, open the pot and add the dried prunes. Close it again and let the prunes cook until they are tender.

And now they are ready to be served! The entire preparation time is over 3 hours so start early with this dish. Another way to lessen the cooking time is to have the brisket tenderized early on. This means that you will no longer need to boil the beef too much to make it soft for forks.

To add a new flavor to this dish, in case that you have tried the Braised Brisket already, I recommend using a small amount of argan oil. This will add a nutty texture and flavor to your beef dish. But remember to add only small amounts since argan oil is very potent. Too much and you will surely ruin your Braised Brisket.

Be sure to try other ways to add something new. You can also add more spices and create a spicy Braised Brisket. You also do not need to worry if there will be leftovers. This dish does not go bad overnight. In the morning you can still have the briskets and even make good sandwiches with them.
