It’s high time for consumers to get to know what they’re paying for. Check the labels of the beauty products you’re using and look for the word Parabens. If most of your beauty products contain Parabens then you’re paying for products that can potentially give you cancer and other serious health problems. Parabens have also been linked to skin ageing and if the anti-aging product you use contain this chemical then you’ve just wasted your money.
What are Parabens?
So what are Parabens and why should we make sure that they are not in the body care products we use? Parabens is an ingredient used as preservatives in many cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. They are the chemicals responsible for prolonging the shelf life of your cosmetics, personal care products, topical pharmaceuticals and even in some foods. Although they extend the life of these products, they may be doing the opposite for you and your body.
Health Hazards of Parabens
So are Parabens really dangerous or is this just a hype thrown out by green cosmetics company. Although there is no final verdict yet on Parabens, whether they are safe or bad, the alarming fact is that parabens have been linked to cancer and various health problems. In 2004, a study made in the UK found traces of five parabens in the breast cancer tumors of 19 out of 20 women with breast cancer. Although this study is done with a small group, one could not ignore the fact that the parabens were detected in 19 out of the 20 women and the parabens were intact and left unaltered by the metabollic processes of the body. Because the parabens were intact and unaltered, this indicated that parabens can actually penetrate through the skin and stay in the tissues of the breast.
Another startling finding is that parabens actually disrupt hormone functions and such can make one more vulnerable to breast cancer as well as reproductive toxicity. Parabens actually imitates estrogen by attaching themselves to estrogen receptors. They also have the ability to trigger growth and multiplication of human breast tumor cells by boosting the expression of genes.
Research Findings on Parabens and Its Effects on the Skin
Researchers in Japan made a study on Parabens and its effects on the skin and they found very startling results. During this research, they conducted an experiment wherein they applied methylparaben on the skin in the same amounts as to those in cosmetics. Afterward, the skin was exposed to UV rays in an amount that one usually gets on average during the summer season which is 30 millijoules every square centimetre. The result was startling. The experiment showed that 19% of the skin cells exposed to UV rays died and the presence of lipid peroxide actually jumped to three times higher than that of a skin without the methylparaben. Lipid peroxide is a substance that hastens the skin’s ageing process. Ironically, parabens are usually found on anti-aging products.
