Do You Know What Can Trigger Acne Breakouts?

What causes acne? Let us find out.

There are thousands of hair follicles found in the skin and each of these follicles has a sebaceous gland that produces sebum. High levels of the male hormone progesterone in the body can trigger an abnormal reaction that causes the sebaceous gland to overproduce oil. This reaction usually occurs at puberty when the production of hormones increases in boys and girls. These hormonal changes can also cause the cells on the epidermis to overlap forming a thick layer of dead skin cells that block the pores. As a result of sebum over production and obstruction enlargement of the sebaceous gland happens. This leads to pimple or common acne.

There are several things that trigger acne. From hormones to what you wear and use daily. Below are some of the common triggers of acne.

Common Acne Triggers

  • Hormonal Changes
Puberty or that time when your body experience sudden spikes or lunges in hormones can trigger acne breakouts. During puberty, hormones start going haywire which leads to overproduction of sebum. Sebum is nourishment for the bacteria that naturally lives in the skin surface which cause acne. More sebum equals more of the acne-causing bacteria therefore the result is not surprisingly…acne breakout.
  • Dirty Skin
Washing your face too often can strip your skin of its natural oils but not cleaning it enough may lead to acne. Washing your face twice a day, once in the morning and once at night, will remove leftover dirt, or makeup that can clog your pores.
  • Sweating
Grimy perspiration can sit on your skin and clog your pores. Take a bath or shower after sweating a lot to clear and clean your skin and prevent acne.
  • Wearing Bangs and Hats
Anything that rubs, irritates and constricts the skin is a potential acne trigger. Keep your hair clean and away from your face. Keep hair accessories clean to prevent irritation and avoid dirt build up that can cause acne.
  • Cosmetic Products
Cosmetic products that have harsh ingredients in them can cause acne. If you can’t avoid wearing make- up, avoid cosmetics or skin products that block the pores or don’t wear make-up too often. Remember to remove make-up before sleeping in.

Cystic Acne Symptoms

It is important to understand the symptoms and causes of cystic acne. The surface of the skin is the best way to distinguish cystic acne from other types of acne. The very give-away of cystic acne is having pus- filled zit. These pustules are often painful, inflamed and sometimes feel hard to the touch. Sometimes a lump can also be felt underneath the skin, or worse, cystic acne can also be experienced with blackheads or whiteheads surrounding the affected area.

It is important to seek immediate treatment for this kind of acne, because this condition can severely damage your skin. The scarring brought about by cystic acne can be long lasting or even permanent. Scars like deep pits or holes on the epidermis can affect one’s confidence or self esteem. It is important that the lesions should not be pricked, and squeezed, or else the likelihood of scarring may increase.
