5 of the Best Foods for Skin
New York Dermatologist and author of Skin Rules, Debra Jaliman, MD, recommends oats since they are low-glycemic. Low glycemic foods do not spike up your blood sugar levels like high-glycemic ones such as refined breads, rice, and pasta. Jaiman added that high-glycemic foods are known to trigger acne and wrinkles. Aside from being low-glycemic, oats also hold a natural plant chemical that aids in preventing damage to the skin cells and soothing skin irritation. Whole grains like shredded wheat, barley and brown rice are also great alternatives.
Oranges are packed with Vitamin C, a potent antioxidant. Antioxidants are believed to protect the skin from the damaging effects of free radicals, which are the number one cause of skin aging. Vitamin C also helps in the production of collagen. This in turn helps keep the skin supple.
Fruits and vegetables are great for your overall body and that includes the skin. Women should strive to get at least 2.5 cups of veggies and 1.5 cups of fruits in a day and for men it’s 3 cups of veggies and 2 cups of fruits in a day. To get a wide range of nutrients from fruits and veggies, opt for tons of colors.
If you love guacamole then you’re doing your skin a great favor. Avocados are packed with a healthy kind of fat, a monounsaturated fat which helps in hydrating your skin. This very healthy fat in avocados also aids in absorbing a number of vitamins and nutrients that are essential for the skin.
For those who love mayo and high-fat salad dressings or dips, you can try using avocados instead. You’ll be surprised just how much avocados are rich in texture and filled with flavor.
4. Lean Beef
Protein is essential in keeping the skin healthy and youthful as it helps build collagen. Lean beef such as top sirloin is an excellent source of high-quality protein. 2- to 4-ounce serving of lean beef 2-3 times a week is perfect. The rest of the days you can have other lean proteins such as eggs, chicken, tofu, beans and fish.
5. Brussels Sprouts
Brussel sprouts are packed with Vitamins A and C which are both antioxidants, as well as folate. As mentioned earlier, Vitamin C helps promote collagen production. Vitamin A and folate may help prevent sun damage. But don’t think that just because you eat brussel sprouts you won’t need sun protection anymore. Always wear sunscreen everyday, that’s the rule.
