For each strand of hair, the growing phase is about 2-3 years and around 90% of your hair is in this phase at any given time. After the growing phase, the hair goes into a resting phase which is about 3 months long before the hair is shed and new hair takes its place. If your diet is lacking protein or does not have enough protein the result can be a number of your hair entering a resting phase.
Everyday, we shed an estimate of 50-100 strands of hair and with a typical scalp having about 120,000 – 150,000 strands of hair, the number of hair we shed is usually not noticeable and not something to get worried about as this is only normal. A protein-deficient or protein-lacking diet will cause a disproportion of the number of hair entering a resting phase which can lead to a more noticeable hair loss
Of course you need more than just protein to get a healthy head of hair. You’ll need iron, Vitamin E and minerals such as selenium, magnesium, and copper. Vitamin D may also play an essential role.
