My daily hair routine goes something like this. I wash my hair with water. I shampoo it. I rinse it again with water after. That’s how simple my routine is. The complicated part happens after showering…when I pick up my flat iron and style my hair for a good 30 to 45 minutes. This is the only way my hair will look good. Without styling, I’d look like a lady with a broom on her head. I’m sure many of you share the sentiment.
Experts have no problem with this. They even agree that being presentable really takes time and effort. However, what they don’t agree on is the aspect most of us choose to spend our time and effort on. They insist that the time and effort part should be devoted on taking care of our hair and not on styling. If we put in more effort on the right way of washing our hair, then our tresses will seldom need styling.
Focus on the Right Places
When washing your hair, the focus should be on your scalp. Shampooing your entire length of hair can create flyaways that are often dull and coarse. Meanwhile, when conditioning, the focus should be on the tips. Conditioning the whole length of hair can make it look limp after.
Determine Your Hair Type
This will help you determine how frequent you should wash your hair. Those with oily hair should wash once a day. Those with chemically treated hair, meanwhile, should wash less frequently to avoid drying your already dry and treated tresses. The same goes for older women. As we age, our scalp becomes less oily so we may not need to shampoo as often. However, if you have flakes on your hair, you need to shampoo more.
Condition and Moisturise
Don’t ever skip this part even if you’re running late for your very important appointment. Conditioning your hair protects it from the sun’s UV rays so it’s important to take the time to do this after every shampoo. Moisturize also with organic products like Argan oil especially if you don’t have time to go to the salon to have your hair treated. This is the only way to revitalize your hair and bring it to its former glory. Argan oil, for instance, is rich in antioxidants that help protect hair from further damage caused by free radicals.
When You Go for a Swim…
Protect your hair! I know you want to look just like your favourite movie stars on films…emerging from water, their hair loose and glistening under the sun…but if you can help it, put on your swimming cap and condition just before swimming. Which would you rather have, a glistening hair exclusive on the beach or a great healthy one anywhere, everyday?
