Oh that troublesome acne. Just when we think we have seen the last of them, here they come again. Yes, they can be persistent, which is something about this skin condition that we really hate.
The severity of one’s acne can lead to scarring and for some people especially those suffering from a very severe case of acne, emotional distress can be at play. The good news is there are treatments that effectively get rid of this skin issue. One important thing to remember when dealing with this skin problem is that earlier treatment is one’s best weapon in preventing or avoiding serious damage to the skin and one’s emotional being.
Factors That Cause Acne
There are certain factors that are at play in the formation of acne.
- Too much production of sebum
- An irregularity in the shedding of dead skin cells which leads to irritation of the follicles on the skin.
- A buildup of bacteria on the skin.
When oil and dead skin cells block the hair follicles on your skin acne happens. The skin has sebaceous glands which are connected to the hair follicles. These glands produce what we call as sebum. Sebum is our body’s natural oils which lubricate the hair and skin. If your sebaceous glands are producing a normal amount of sebum, these natural oils wouldn’t have trouble traveling up and out to the openings of the follicles then to the skin surface. However when there is an overproduction of sebum and dead skin cells, these two can clog the hair follicles and creates an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive.
When there is blockage in the hair follicles, the walls of the follicle can well up which would cause the acne we popularly call as white heads. The type of acne we call as blackhead happens when the plug is exposed to the surface. The black color is due to exposure to oxygen. Pimples on the other hand are those raised red spots having a white middle. This happens when the follicles that are blocked gets inflamed and infected. Cystic acne develops if the blockage and inflammation happens deep in the follicles. Cystic acne refers to the lumps or boil-like infections under the skin’s surface and it is the most severe type of acne.
The ideal solution is to have your acne looked at by a dermatologist especially if you are suffering from cystic acne. However there are also anti-acne products that can treat this skin problem. Some people also opt for home remedies for acne.
Hope this gave light on your acne concerns.
