However this should not be the only protection you provide the nails with. Here are some tips on how you can wear a healthy and pretty set of nails throughout the cold winter time.

However the winter season also brings some things that we’re not too happy about. One of these things is having to wear craggy nails as well as cuticles. The dry air that winter brings can be too harsh especially to your hands. So better start ensuring that your hands including the nails are protected.
Why Your Nails are Not Too Fond of Winter
The reason why your nails don’t like the winter season that because of moisture loss. A dermatologist in New York city named Erin Gilbert said that on average a set of healthy nails have 18% of water and since during the winter season your nails are exposed to extreme temperatures (from freezing temperatures outdoors to hot and dry air from indoor heating and vice versa) constantly, they get dehydrated. Dry and dehydrated nails are prone to splitting, chipping and breakage.
Aside from extreme temperatures, your winter habits may also play a role on why your nails become dry. If you love taking long hot showers and bath, the hot water will rob moisture from your nails. If you still keep on using products that can dry the nails such as polish removers with acetone and hand sanitisers with alcohol in its ingredients, your nails will easily dry out. Dishwashing liquid also contains harsh chemicals that will dry out the nails. Be sure to wear rubber gloves when doing your dishes.
Moisturise Your Nails
To keep your nails moisturised ans well hydrated all throughout the cold days of the winter season, you need to have a handy moisturiser always. It’s not just the skin that needs the love and care of potent moisturisers, your nails do too. Your nails are flattened dead cells with keratin and moisturisers have the power to make your nails supple and flexible therefore they have a lesser chance of getting chipped or broken.
Moisturising the nails everyday is great but you should do at least an intense nail moisturising treatment once a week. First off soak your nails in lukewarm water with a few drops of essential oils for about 10 minutes. Dry off your hands and nails then coat your nails with an essential oil of your choice. Once done wear a pair of cotton gloves for about an hour to seal in the moisture!
A great product to use on your nails is the Moroccan Argan oil. This oil is packed with nutrients having intense moisturising prowess such as Vitamin E, essential fatty acids and Sterols. Vitamin E will also make the nails stronger.
