We have written a lot about anti-aging foods but just too little on anti-aging drinks. Here are a few drinks that can help keep your mind as sharp as a razor and your body in great shape.

  1. Pink Grapefruit Juice
    If you want smoother skin, then serve yourself a glass of pink grapefruit juice regularly. Lycopene is what gives pink grapefruit its pink-red hue and lycopene, is a carotenoid that will help keep your skin smooth. The European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics published a study made on lycopene and its effects on the skin. The study revealed that of the 20 participants in the study, those with higher skin concentrations of lycopene had smoother skin.
  2. Alcohol Against Alzheimer’s Disease?
    You probably raised a brow after reading this but before you close this page, please read on. Drinking alcohol especially red wine, and in moderation is actually beneficial to your health and may prevent dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. By moderately, we mean a glass a day for women and two glasses a day for men. So how can drinking alcohol moderately help ward off Alzheimer’s disease? As we get older, our brain cells start to due and this creates gaps which slow down nerve transmission within our brain and between the brain and the rest of the body. Studies have shown that moderate alcohol drinking seems to somehow prevent these “gaps” or “potholes” from developing and our scientists are baffled by this and are not sure why or how. However, one should keep in mind that drinking alcohol in high doses kills brain cells which can lead to brain damage and may start to manifest as a permanent memory loss.
  3. Cocoa for Better Heart Health
    Are you cuckoo for cocoa drinks? Well, you should be if you want a healthier heart. Have you heard about how the Kuna people living in San Blas islands, just off the coast of Panama have a rate of heart disease 9 times less than that of mainland Panama? The reason for this can be because the Kuna people drink a lot of beverage made with hearty proportions of cocoa. So what’s in cocoa that helps keep the heart healthier? Cocoa is unusually packed with flavanols. Flavanols help in keeping the healthy function of blood vessels. Do you know what health benefits you’ll get from maintaining youthful blood vessels? Your risk for type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease, and dementia are significantly lowered.
  4. Beat Dementia with Beet Juice
    Beets are loaded with nitrates. You’ll have to take note that the nitrates in beets are naturally occurring and different from the artificial nitrates in processed meat. Artificial nitrates are unhealthy while naturally occurring nitrates may hold great benefits to one’s health and one of its possible benefits is warding off dementia. The journal Nitric Oxide published a study in 2011 which revealed that older adults who followed a nitrate-packed diet had improved blood flow to their frontal lobe, which is an area of the brain commonly associated with dementia. Poor blood flow is a main contributor of age-related cognitive decline. Scientists believe that the nitrates’ nitric oxide, which is a compound that helps keep the blood vessels supple, also helps in increasing brain blood flow.
