Here is a list of harmful ingredients that some skin care products contain.

Harmful Ingredients in Skin Care Products

  • Parabens – Parabens are popularly used by cosmetic companies and pharmaceutical industries as preservatives in their products. Parabens are also known as Methylyparaben, Propylparaben, IIsoparaben and Butylparaben. The bad news about parabens is that this group of chemicals have been linked to possible carcinogenicity or simply put these chemicals can be possibly cancerous. Continuous exposure to parabens can also lead to estrogenic effect. It has already been reported by the EPA or US Environmental Protection Agency that in their tests parabens displayed estrogenic activity. Now why should you be concerned with this finding? Estrogen actually stimulates breast cancer and this is an accepted fact in the medical society. Did you also know that absorption of chemicals through the skin is 10 times the concentration of that taken orally?

You may be thinking that this is an exaggeration but this is the truth. You may want to believe that parabens are safe to use but many studies have been conducted to check if continuous and repeated exposure to parabens is safe but there are no results that back this up. Parabens are added in skin care products and many other personal products so that its shelf life is prolonged. Your skin care products may be able to outlast you after all as the chemicals prolonging their shelf life is killing you. Check your lotion, body wash, cleansers etc for parabens.

  • Phthalates – You should see to it that this ingredient is not found in the skin care product that you use. Phthalates is a toxic ingredient found in many skin care products. DBP (Dibutylphthalate), DEP (diethylphthalate )and butyl ester are used so that lotions are absorbed better into the skin. DEHP or Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate is already classified by the EPA as a probably human carcinogen. This simply means that this chemical can cause cancer.
