Acne comes in many forms and the most dreaded of them all is pimples. Many people are not bothered much with whiteheads and blackheads but when pimples get in the picture, it’s a different story.
What’s Causing Your Acne?
When acne is present it means that there is a malfunction in your pilosebaceous unit because of the effects of hormones. You may be wondering what pilosebaceous unit is. This is a fancy name referring to a hair follicle, sebaeous gland and a hair. The only part of our body that does not have these units are you palms, soles, lower lip and the top of your feet. Your face, upper neck and the chest hold the most numbers of the pilosebaceous units. You probably are already aware that sebum is produced naturally by the sebaceous glands to keep the hair and skin moisturized. However when adolescence hits, the sebaceous glands become enlarged and the result is a higher production of sebum. This happens because of the hormone androgen.
The Chain Reaction Causing Acne
The acne causing bacterium called Propionibacterium acnes naturally lives on the skin. Sebum is its source of nourishment. The more sebum you have the more of this bacterium you have in your follicles. So what if you have this bacterium in your follicles? The chain reaction that leads to acne starts with this. The bacterium lures white blood cells into the follicle. The bad news is white blood cells actually will manufacture an enzyme that would damage the follicle wall which means that whatever is in the follicle would get in the dermis. The skin then would have an inflammatory reaction which can either be red bumps, pustules or nodules. Now, Propionibacterium acnes also produce free fatty acids which further irritates the skin therefore the inflammation in the follicle is intensified.

Anyone who had dealt with an acne problem especially pimples would know exactly that it can cause emotional distress, depression and a dip in one’s self-confidence. We may have to agree that our kind is very visual and as society would have it, acne especially pimples are not very pleasant to look at.

Exercise can give you that youthful glow and help clear out acne. Exercise can help get rid of toxins that can contribute acne and balance out hormonal imbalance.
- Keep the Skin Moisturized
Dry skin can worsen your acne as this can trigger your sebaceous glands to produce more oil as a compromise. As mentioned earlier, the Propionibacterium acnes or simply the bacterium that causes acne feeds on sebum. Use an effective moisturizer such as Argan oil.
