When it comes to the skin, we, if not most, would love to keep it looking and feeling youthful. Every so often, a new wonder anti-aging product, or technique comes out and becomes trending because of our desire to retain our youthful look. We have seen serums, creams, and diet for anti-aging come and go and we are bound to see many more of them in the future.
Aging is a natural biological process. This is a fact. And signs of aging such as wrinkles, and fine lines, will eventually appear on the skin. However, there are ways for us to minimize these signs of skin aging, and even delay them from appearing. Tons of anti-aging serums, creams, lotions, and potions are available in the market. And there are even certain foods that can help us keep our skin looking youthful. But have you heard of red wine being a potent anti-aging weapon? A plastic surgeon in Seattle and Author of Age Gets Better with Wine Richard A Baxter, MD, believes so. Check out an interview with him by WebMD on red wine and anti-aging here.
Is Red Wine an Effective Anti-aging Weapon?
Some people are fond of drinking a glass of red wine to relax. But aside from relaxation benefits, red wine (only a glass or 4 ounces in a day) also has health and beauty benefits. More than 10 years of research indicated that consumption of red wine in moderate amounts improves one’s cardiovascular health. This is due to the fact that red wine contains a high amount of antioxidants, which protect the heart from damage. The same antioxidants in red wine also help keep the skin youthful.
Antioxidants in Red Wine and Aging
So what is it with antioxidants that help keep the skin youthful? First, you’ll have to understand free radicals first. Free radicals damage the cells of the body triggering aging and age-related diseases. What antioxidants do is zap up free radicals before they can start wreaking havoc in the body. Red wine holds a high amount of antioxidants called polyphenols including resveratrol. These antioxidants will help delay the onset of skin aging, as well as minimize the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Consuming a glass of red wine a day will also result to a glowing skin, thus making you look more youthful.
Other Health Benefits of Red Wine
Numerous studies found out that drinking red wine regularly, and in moderate amount can prevent actinic keratoses or precancerous skin lesions. One’s risk of Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, diabetes, and other age-related diseases are also greatly reduced.
If you have certain health conditions, or if you are taking certain medications, it is best to consult your doctor first before drinking red wine.
