If you would want to understand the anatomy of the skin, it is vital for you to know the 3 layers of the skin and how each one functions. The skin has 3 layers – the epidermis, the dermis, and the subcutaneous tissue.

  • Epidermis. This is the outermost layer of the skin. It is made up of keratinocytes that has large amounts of keratin. This layer also contains water that keeps the skin moisturized – making skin soft and smooth.
  • Dermis. This is the layer under the epidermis. This layer is made up of blood vessels, nerve endings, sweat glands, and hair follicles. Every one of the dermis’ components holds a special function. For example, blood vessels are in charge of feeding the skin, while nerve endings take charge in providing sensation of touch.
  • Subcutaneous Tissue. This is a layer of fat and connective tissue found under the dermis. It houses larger blood vessels that are important to the skin and the whole body. It helps in the regulation of temperature not just in the skin but in the whole body as well.
