Maintaining Your Skin’s Elasticity

A skin that is healthy is able to keep its original elasticity. What does this mean? It simply means that the skin will go back to its original state after being stretched. Imagine a piece of a rubber band being stretched on one end or both ends. After letting the end or ends go the rubber band gets back to its original shape. The dermis, which is the second layer of the skin is mainly responsible for its elasticity.

You probably are wondering why the skin has to be elastic. Let us get to know the dermis better and its functions to get the answer to this question. Connective tissues and collagen make up the dermis. This layer of the skin ensures that the epidermis or the outer layer is strong enough to offer protection to the body from outside factors. Reticular fibers are also present in the dermis. These fibers are responsible for the elasticity of the skin as well as its extensibility. As we age, the skin starts losing its elasticity.

So how do you keep your skin youthful and healthy? Don’t despair as there are plenty of ways. Although aging will have its effects on our skin, there are many things you can do to keep your skin healthy as you age.

Keep Moving

Exercise is essential in keeping the skin healthy. When you work out, circulation is improved therefore blood travels to your skin. Blood carries nutrients and oxygen and they are both essential in maintaining the skin’s health. When you exercise, you sweat and toxins are released from your skin via your sweat. You should see to it that exercise is a regular part of your schedule.

Drink Enough Water

You may have been hearing this advise from many people and even your health care provider. Drinking enough water is healthy for the entire body including your skin. If your skin is starting to look dry and dull, chances are your body is not getting enough fluids. Water is also essential in maintaining the skin’s elasticity therefore it is essential that you keep your body hydrated. When you sweat, your skin releases your body fluids. So drink up and make sure the amount of water that you drink is enough to replace those that you lost.

Quit Smoking

For many long-time smokers, this is one of the hardest things to do. Cigarettes are addictive which is why breaking up with your cigarette is so hard to do. The nicotine in cigarettes robs your skin of the nutrients and oxygen it needs to maintain its health. How? Nicotine constricts blood vessels which leads to poor circulation. Aside from nicotine, there are also numerous chemicals in cigarettes that cause damage to your DNA and cells which can lead to cancer. When you quit smoking, it is not only your skin that is benefited. Your entire body is and you’ll start seeing and feeling much improvement on your health after just a month or two of not smoking.
