No One is Immune from Skin Cancer

You’re in power and you’re rich. You’re young or you feel young.
You feel invincible. You feel that nothing can stop you.
Well, you’re wrong.

United States Representative Briana Bilbray and his youngest daughter learned this the hard way. Both love the outdoors. Unfortunately, they have another thing in common. Both have been diagnosed with skin cancer.

Briana’s Story

Briana said that living in San Diego, being tanned was the look. Trying to achieve that bronze look, she shared, was a constant and conscious effort all throughout her 25 years.

Her family noticed a mole on her skin and asked her to see a dermatologist. However, not seeing the urgency for an appointment, she postponed her check up.

In 2011, Briana was diagnosed with melanoma, the deadliest type of skin cancer. She already relapsed twice. Last April, her condition required her to undergo radiation treatments.

Resigned to her fate, Briana admitted that unless a cure is found, she may have to live with this disease for the rest of her life. What’s more painful, she shared, is that she knew how to prevent the disease but didn’t do it.

“The pain that I’m putting my family through because of my negligence is the worst feeling in the world, and all I had to do was wear sunscreen.” added Briana.

Rep. Bilbray’s Story

Briana’s discovery of her cancer was indeed, a sad period for the Bilbray family. As if that wasn’t hard enough, two weeks after, another family was diagnosed with cancer — Rep. Bilbray. The congressman was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, another form of skin cancer. It appeared on his lip. He had to undergo surgery to remove the cancer. He went under the knife again to reconstruct his damaged lips. The father and daughter cannot underscore the importance of preventing skin cancer. Both have now taken upon themselves the role of disseminating information about this disease.

Wake up Call

Experts hope that the story of the Bilbray family will serve as a wake up call to all those who take sunscreen application for granted. Overexposure to the sun’s UV rays is the most common cause of skin cancer and this type of cancer can easily be prevented through regular sunscreen application. Additional protection can be provided by natural antioxidant-rich skin care products. One great skin product is Argan oil. Hailed as the miracle oil from Morocco, Argan oil is packed with vitamins, essential fats and antioxidants that help protect skin from environmental damage.
