The cold days of winter may bring some good things but it does bring some bad news too. When it comes to the skin, winter time can bring uncomfortable dryness. Some people get it worse than just that general tight dry feeling but also experience flaky skin, cracking or even eczema flare-ups. And things don’t get better when you step indoors. With the heater on, the skin even gets drier because of exposure to extreme temperatures.
So it seems like there’s no escaping from dry flaky skin when the winter hits. This is absolutely not true. You just need to give your skin care regimen a little tweaking to ensure that your skin stays moist, healthy, and soft all winter long. Here are a few tips!
Winter Skin Care Tips
1. Consult a Dermatologist
When you want good skin care advice, it is best to go to the skin experts. Visiting a dermatologist at least once a year is a great investment for your skin. A dermatologist can give you an analysis of your skin type, rev up your current skin care routine and advise you on which skin care products are best suited for you. Don’t think that just because a dermatologist suggested a skin product for you, this means that such product is high-end or very expensive. Dermatologists are more concerned about the way your skin reacts to a product than the price of a product.
2. Moisturize and Moisturize
The cold days of winter will require you to moisturize your skin even more to avoid dry flaky skin. These cold days you’ll need a potent moisturizer such as the Argan oil. The oil is loaded with nutrients having strong moisturizing properties such as Vitamin E, essential fatty acids, and sterols. Aside from its moisturizing benefits, Argan oil can also help minimize fine lines and wrinkles thanks to the numerous antioxidants found in the oil. Oil-based moisturizers are recommended than water-based since the oil creates a protective layer on the skin which will help retain moisture better than any other cream or lotion. But don’t just choose any oil as not all oils are suited for the face. Argan oil is easily absorbed by the skin because its sterols is compatible with the skin’s natural oils. Avocado oil, almond oil, and primrose oil are also excellent choices.
3. Don’t Forget to Lather on Sunscreen
You should already know by now that sunscreen is not just for the summer season. You should be wearing sunscreen no matter what season it is or whatever weather condition. The winter sun plus the snow glare can still cause havoc on your skin. So applying a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day is recommended. Make sure that you apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before heading out and reapply if you are outdoors for a long time.
These are just 3 winter skin care tips that will help prevent dry and flaky skin.
