Protect Yourself from Breast Cancer by Following a Cancer-Fighting Diet

About 1 in 3 cancers diagnosed in the US in women is breast cancer. This makes breast cancer as the second most common cancer among US women next to skin cancers. Although men have a lower risk of developing breast cancer, they should still remain vigilant against this disease and visit their doctor once they see any change in their breasts.

Both men and women should take the risk of breast cancer seriously. We should all do our best efforts to protect ourselves from this serious and in some cases fatal disease. How can you protect yourself from breast cancer? A simple change in diet can actually help lower your risk of developing breast cancer and other forms of cancer.

Adopt a Cancer-Fighting Diet

There are certain foods that hold anti-cancer prowess. Including these foods in your meals will not only lower your risk of developing cancer but you will also experience a good improvement on your overall health. So what should your diet have?

Fruits and Veggies

You may have had fights with your mom and dad when you were little over fruits and vegetables but they are actually right to force you to eat them. Fruits and vegetables are teeming with antioxidants and phytonutrients that promote good health. The American Institute for Cancer Research revealed that fruits and vegetables are an important key to a cancer-fighting diet. On top of reducing one’s risk of breast cancer, fruits and vegetables may also have the ability to prevent the recurrence of diseases that are potentially fatal or life threatening. Research has shown that colorful fruits and vegetables are particularly effective in combating cancer. So make sure that you shop for richly colored orange, yellow green and dark red fruits and vegetables. Fill your plate with the colors of these fruits and vegetables to protect yourself against breast cancer.

Fatty Fish

Fatty fish are packed with omega-3 fatty acids which are known to promote a stronger immune system and have shown to decrease or slow down tumor growth. Fatty fish like salmon, tuna and mackerel are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids so you should have them in your diet. Aside from omega-3, these fatty fish are also teeming with Vitamin D. Vitamin D is crucial in promoting bone health and research have shown that this nutrient can actually cut down your risk of breast cancer by 50% and reduce the risk of recurrence of cancer.

Green Tea

Follow the English men and women and have 3 to 4 cups of green tea every day. Green tea is an excellent source of flavonoids which have potent antioxidant properties. Having 3 to 4 cups of tea every single day can lower your risk of breast cancer. Women who are post-menopausal should follow this advice as 3 to 4 cupful of green tea can reduce their risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer and other forms of cancer.

These are just some of the cancer-fighting foods that you should include in your meals. You should also have beans, lentils and cruciferous veggies such as broccoli, kale and cabbage as they offer an excellent protection against breast cancer!
