When it comes to the skin, dermatologists are the expert. Have you ever seen a dermatologist with flawed skin? For sure, I haven’t. Dermatologists seem to have cracked the secret to healthy, beautiful and youthful skin. So how do dermatologists keep their skin youthful, glowing and fresh every day? Here are some skin care tips that dermatologists themselves follow.
Skin Care Tips from the Skin Experts
1. Keep the Skin Protected
Sun protection is essential in keeping the skin healthy, beautiful and youthful. Sunscreen lotions offer protection from UV rays which are free radicals that cause havoc in the skin triggering the formation of wrinkles, fine lines, sun spots and can cause skin to sag. Lisa Garner, MD, a Texas-based dermatologist and president of the Women’s Dermatologic Study uses about 1/2 teaspoon of broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 in coating her face, neck, and ears. Of course, don’t forget to also lather on sunscreen to the rest of your skin.
2. Include Foods Packed with EFAs in Your Diet
Essential fatty acids or EFAs are not only potent moisturizers. They also help address inflammation which is one of the triiggers of fine lines, skin sagging, as well as blotchiness. Doris Day, MD, a dermatologist in New York City includes almonds on her breakfast as almonds are loaded with EFAs. If you are not fond of munching on nuts, other excellent sources of EFAs include salmon, tuna, halibut, sardine, and mackerel.
3. Enter the Zen Zone
If anyone is very familiar with stress, that would be doctors. When your body has high levels of tension this can cause hormone production to spike up which can trigger breakouts or if you are suffering from skin conditions such as psoriasis, stress can aggravate your condition. Managing stress will keep your skkin calm. Of course, learning how to manage stress effectively isn’t that easy. Annie Chiu, MD, a dermatologist in LA takes a 10-minute time out to apply a facial mask then relax on her bed. Another trick she does is turning off her mobile phone after the clock strikes 8 p.m.
4. Pair Up the Right Potions
For rapid skin rejuvenation you should know which ingredients work together best, according to Mary Lupo, MD, a dermatologist in New Orleans. In the morning, pair up your sunscreen lotion with a skin care product packed with antioxidants such as Argan oil. In the morning the best pair would be products with retinoids and peptides.
5. Your Evening Skin Care Routine
It can be hard to stick to your evening skin care routine especially when you’ve had a very busy and tiring day. To avoid missing your skin care routine at night, you can start having a skin care kit with all the products you use for your night time routine kept on your nightstand. This is a technique used by Francesca Fusco, MD, a New York City dermatologist. If you have forgotten to apply a product while in the bathroom and you’re just too tired to get up, you can easily reach out for your “just in case” evening skin care kit and apply the product while in bed.
