Melanin is our skin’s natural defense against the harsh UV rays from the sun. When exposed to the sun, the body produces more melanin. Those skin areas that are exposed to the sun mostly can start having dark spots and age prematurely. To protect your skin against dark spots and premature aging avoid overexposing your skin to the sun and always wear sun protection.
- Hormonal Imbalance
Hormonal imbalance can also give rise to dark spots on the skin. Usually, it is women that get dark spots due to hormonal imbalance and most commonly it is during or after pregnancy. Some women who undergo estrogen treatments also experience dark spots on their skin as a side effect.
- Acne, Bruises and Rashes
Dark spots on the skin can also be caused by acne, wounds, bruises and rashes. All of these things usually leave a mark on the skin after they have healed. In the case of acne, many people get dark spots because of picking and squeezing them.

Time will eventually take a toll on our skin. As we age wrinkles, fine lines and dryness will soon creep in. It is not time or age itself that causes skin pigmentation. Dark spots appear as we get older because they as a result of our prolonged exposure to the sun.
